Fall 2025 Survey of the Portland Insight Meditation Center Sangha

The following survey has been developed by the PIMC Teacher Leadership Committee, a group of dedicated PIMC Dharma practitioners, including several current board members. The committee is researching teaching frameworks utilized by other Buddhist communities and gauging sentiments about Dharma teaching within the wider PIMC Sangha.

The Teacher Leadership Committee will use survey responses to help create a recommendation to the PIMC board on how best to build out the organization’s teaching structure moving forward. Unless you choose to add your name at the end of the survey, the results will be delivered anonymously.

The following questions address teacher structures at PIMC. Note that the options are not exclusive. PIMC could have none, one, or any combination of the following possibilities.

Guiding Teacher Model

In this model, a guiding teacher is responsible for the spiritual health and direction of the organization. This person facilitates the mission of the organization, and serves as the most visible teacher. This was the general structure used at PIMC before September 2024.

I support having a single guiding teacher at PIMC

Shared Teaching Model

In a shared teaching model, a group of teachers (who have been authorized to teach the Dharma) all teach on a regular basis and work together to provide spiritual planning and guidance to the organization. These teachers offer ongoing groups, regularly teach on Sunday mornings, and may also lead classes and one-day Saturday retreats.

I support the idea of using a Shared Teaching model to lead spiritual development at PIMC

Guest Teacher Model

In this framework, spiritual guidance and leadership mainly comes from teachers outside the Sangha. Guest teachers lead most classes, workshops and meditation sessions (including Sunday). The PIMC board, a programming committee or dedicated staff person would be responsible for scheduling guest teachers.

I support relying mainly on guest teachers at PIMC

What qualities would you most like to see in PIMC teachers moving forward? (Check no more than three)
On a scale of 0 to 10, how likely are you to recommend PIMC to a friend or a family member? (0 indicates not likely at all, 10 indicates extremely likely)
